Drøbak is a small village on the Oslo fjord approximately 40 km south of Oslo The town only has about 3 000 inhabitants It is a largely residential town with little industry most people here work in Oslo Drøbak used to be a winter harbour for Oslo in severe winters the fjord freezes over all the way out here Today it is much better known as an attractive place for summer houses The population of Droebak almost doubles in the summer holiday season when the Oslo folk descend for a taste of something more rustic Most of the town centre consists of old wooden houses and along the fjord side a number of the old captain houses remain The town itself is now a protected area any building work must be approved by the town council s Antiquarian Committee.
